Eddie: Garden Tour

How many gardeners help to maintain the flowers and plants?

We have 6 gardeners taking care of a different zone.

Could you tell us a problem you had in the garden?  How did you handle it?

"Well, once they wanted to put grass in a new area, and I went to talk to the dean to plant flowers insted of grass, so I told him that I only needed $3000 dollars and I convince him."

Sustainability:

The drainage network is design very well to have sustainability, so if it rains the water do not block up.

Some of the plants are donated.

Curious facts I learned:

There are some areas where they cannot plant or dig because there are cables.

“This plant spreads like crazy” which means It grows all around very fast (hilarious expression!)

“People when they first want to start a garden, they freeze because they are afraid plants won’t grow up or it won’t work. But, they have to believe everything you do will work”

Flora, Flowers, Fauna and Sustainability Tour at Campus UW-Whitewater

In this Tour I saw different kinds of flowers around the campus. The campus has 6 gardeners and each one is  in charge of one different a area of the campus and they decide what kind of flower plant.
The sustainability department no only is in charge to create projects how can help to conserve water, but they almost all have some aspect of financial savings to the taxpayers. This department is in chard of some important activities here in the UW-Whitewater, like:

  • Repurposed containers
  • Harvesting rain water
  • Bioswales (are landscape elements designed to remove silt from surface runoff water.)

The waterfall was part of some kind of project of Sustainability?

No really, this project was made thanks to donations (money, flowers and material). The purpose of this project was redecorate the campus.

Who pay for all the sustainability projects, here in UW-Whitewater?

Everybody, all this is possible thanks to donation of people.

Garden Tour

This day we made a tour on the gardens of UWW, our guide Steve Bortinelli, the person who is in charge of the gardens and sustainability program on UWW gave us a lot information about his work, also he answered the next questions:

1.- How many kind of plants and flowers there are on the campus of UWW?
Over 100 for all, some flowers are wild, we didn't cultivated but we adopted as part of our garden, because we are cheap (laughing in this last sentence).

2.- Since when you stared cultivate flowers on the campus?
Around 15 years, I've been working here since 2000, the gardens were very different, but we still working on many projects and  improvements.

3.- Could you give us an example of sustainability used on the campus?
Sure, the fountain's water is pumping constantly, we made this to not waste clean water, as well the vases which are on the lamps were can trash one day, but we decide give it other use, it's a way to save money, because... We are cheap! (continuing laughing)

Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) MLA Formatting

Hello everyone!

I loved reading about your quotes! How wonderful!
Here is the online resource Sarah showed us the other day during our citation workshop.

https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/

It outlines the specifics of citing sources in MLA format.

Please remember to bring your completed debate notes and preparation sheet tomorrow, as well as what you worked on with Anjie last week. I am looking forward to seeing all of your hard work!

¡Hasta maƱana!

Prof. Teri

Eddie: Quote

This quote defines me because I believe that every single person is changing the world in a positive way. So, it is essential that we believe always in ourselves. We should not wait for somebody else to do important things to change the world. If we wait for a future change then it will never happen. Also, we need to be conscious that every single thing we do in our daily life is vital for world’s progress. We need to understand that we are the world right now!

Quote

"Ask not what your country can do for you country; ask what you can do for your country"
-John F. Kenedy

I like this quote because I feel identified, I think to improve and change as society is necessary start changing by ourselves, think different, make good things no matter who is watching, be honest, then if we adopt a nice attitude, if we change our mind may be we can be an example to other persons, and on one point rice a little person with this thoughts and it will rice their children at the same way, and repetitively, as string. May be we could change as society  see for others and not selfishly.

Quote

  • The meaning of this quote is very significant to me because all is true. Nobody can judge you and you can't judge nobody cause nobody have her "hands clean". That's mean nobody is perfect. So live your life and let live!

DESIGNS FROM NATURE

In a room at Stanford University, scientists are studying a small animal called a gecko. It can move very quickly up and down a tree and even upside down on ceiling. The scientists are particularly interested in the gecko's feet. They want to use the same design on a metal robot that looks very similar to the gecko. This kind of science is called BiomimeticsThis science not only has helped to design our world but promise many more possibilities.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERNET

The Internet began as a project in the 1960's. It was based on a new idea about how to send information. The system of this project is base on packet switching, this system divides up information into smaller pieces, or packets. The packets are sent over a network. If one route are busy, the packets take a different rout. It make the network very fast and reliable.
By the 1990's, the World Wide Web was in place. By the middle of the 1990's, there was a huge amount of traffic on the web. E-Mail and other forms of communication  over the Web had spread throughout the world.

The impact of the Internet

It is hard to imagine life without the Internet. Many people consider the Internet to be an important democratic institution because it make information available to anyone with access to a computer connected to the Internet. In 2002, a U.S Department of Commerce report noted that there were 2 million new Internet users every month.

THE IMPACT OF THE INTERNET

Internet has permitted the greatest exchange of information in history. People publish their work and ideas, before the internet publication was expensive. With the intention of  Browser, it has also become easy to find information quickly. Many people consider the Internet to be an important democratic institution because it makes information available   to anyone with access to the Internet.
Although the web has brought advantages, it also presents problems. Many people can share ideas but it also spread hatred and false information. Finally, the same technology that give us access to other peoples information give other people access to our private information.
People with higher incomes and educational levels are more likely to have access to the internet and all the advantages it brings.

Eddie: Summaries and Paraphrase

The development of internet summary

Internet started as a Project in the 1960s to connect researchers at several universities and in government departments. The idea of internet came up by looking a different way from telephone to send information. It was not planned at the beginning to be a personal communication tool, but they began to use it quickly as e-mail. There were a lot of people using internet by the 90’s. Nowadays, internet is used to share information and to communicate through text, pictures and videos. On the other hand, internet can be used by pirate cybernetics who steel information from credit cards people to robber their money. In addition, internet is for a lot of people an important democratic tool where you can share your thoughts openly around the world in seconds. However, poor people cannot get access to internet. Despite of this fact, every month the internet users is going up.

Design from nature summary

The science of studying animals and plants to copy their designs is called “biomimetic”.  Scientist, engineers and designers study them to learn about them by copying. For instance, engineers in Canada are studying whale flippers due to their effectivity in water. In short, biomimetic is good for getting knowledge that allow humans to invent and improve things. However, it can be really slow. It is not surprising because we know animals and plants takes millions of years to evolve.

Paragraph paraphrased

In short, nature can take millions of years to evolve, so it is not surprising that for humans it is slow to develop biomimetic studies too. And there are a lot of things to accomplish yet.

Eddie: Weekend excursion

This weekend was great! I went with my classmates and teachers to Milwaukee. First, we went to a beer tour. I learned the history of the Miller beer. Also, I learned important information of the production beer. For example, I learned that Chicago is the biggest consumer of this beer. We tried different beer flavors, and all of them were interesting. Second, we visited the Milwaukee city. I learned that USA markets are different from my country. They are modern and new. In addition, we visited the Milwaukee art museum. It was a big and moder museum. The paintings and portraits were really good. I really liked to see Mexican art in here. I felt very proud that Frida Kahlo was in this museum, so I had goosebumps Finally, we went to a baseball game. I will never forget this day because this was my first time watching and learning about a baseball game.  On saturday I was so tired that I prefered to rest. We did on Friday what I usually do in a whole week. But it really worth it! I hope next weekend to be like the last one.

A perfect weekend!

This weekend was an amazing day with friends, first we went to Milwaukee on Friday, we went to Miller Brewery, Art Museum and our first professional baseball game. In Milwaukee we saw and learned about Miller beer, how they made the beer and they history like a biggest brewery company in the USA, after that we went to a Market in the city (In my opinion is the best place to eat, because is full of Milwaukee's flavors). Also we saw an incredible art exhibition about artists who started a new concept in the art, like Frida Khalo and Pablo Picasso. And last thing we saw our first baseball game, Brewers vs Pirates; obviously the winner were the Brewers team.

On Saturday Reinaldo, Giuliano (I don't know how it spelled), Ari and I went to the Aquatic Center here in town with Kari (She's really nice person and funny). We swam in a big pool and played something like "wet-basketball" or "water-basket", was really funny and obviously Giuliano and I won the game. After that we came to our rooms to take a shower and then we went to the Starin kitchen to made our dinner. We ate kind of sandwich but with pizza sauce, pepperoni and cheese (I don't remember the name of that) and the dessert was a super sweet marshmallow sandwich (Also I can not remember the name of that). But really was a perfect weekend for mi, thank you Megan, Teri and Kari for that amazing weekend.  :D

Weekend

This is the second weekend in the university and has been the best until today. The Friday was awesome! we met a lot of nice places, everything was new for me, I learned more about american food and culture, and the baseball game was so funny, I really enjoy it.

The Saturday we met Kari she's a nice girl and so hyperactive. First we sow us out side from our building, Ivan and I were already to go to the aquatic center but the Brazilians guys weren't so Kari went to their bedroom to find them, after 20 minutes they arrived down stairs, it was supposed we were to cook but the sky was very cloudy and Rienaldo and Juilano were really hungry so we decided don't cook and go to eat something at some burger's restaurant. When we were there stared to rain so hard that was a tornado alert, but almost everybody was calm down so we keep there. When Reinaldo and Juliano finished to eat the rain had gone and we let the place and went to the aquatic center.
In the aquatic center we swam and played a kind of waterbasket, it was fun, then we let the pool and came back to the campus, the sky was so sunny it didn't look like if had rained.  Everyone took a shower and the we cook something between pizza and sandwich ( I can't remember the name) and cookies with marshmallow. It was a very nice day.

Eddie: Reflect on Hula on over in UC.

Aloha!!! I really like this day because I could understand more the meaning of the Hawaiian dance. I had an idea, but now I understand that every step has a meaning; for example, one step was like fishing. Also, there was a dance step like eating coco nut. On the other hand, I love to be in the workshop because it was therapeutic; in other words, I was focus on what I was doing forgetting the rest of the world!

Knowing a little about Hawaii & having fun

Today was a really funny day in the UC, was a king of "Kermes". I try to do craft and seriously, was hard and the same way was funny. Also I ate two different dishes typical from Hawaii , the first one was a taco fish, (I don't remember the name of the fish) it was really good, the second one was a king of pork sandwich also very delicious; that was my favorite part of the day, I almost have a Food Coma. Also I won a couple of thing played, was funny the game and watch Sarah play. I saw dance Ari, Teri and Sarah dance, they made a good job whit the Hawaiian dance, was the funniest thing in the day.

Hula&Craft

This days was really interesting and fun, I tried dance Hula a dance from Hawai, first I was shy because  I was in front of a lot people and I'm not the best dancer so I think was funny also, I learned something about other culture and that I really like. Today I made craft, I had a lot of ideas to what I could make with a little box, but was easier in my mint, however I did my best and I loved the result.
The event remember me a kind of carnival, in Mexico we call them "Kermes" and is almost the same with food, activities, games and things like that, I enjoy it pretty much =)

What I expect from the classes is improve my academic vocabulary to can make formal presentation, I hope the process be funny and interesting, I would like learn slang words to can have informal conversations, also I want to learn the difference in words with similar meaning like on/in - for/per - what/witch - meet/know not/no between others to know when use it each one.  Learn synonymous to no repeat the same words writing and speaking.  I'd like learn more about the American culture as wine, food, traditions, holidays and manners.

I'll love learn more and practice food's vocabulary :3

Blog post 1: Goals and Interestes Eduardo Aguilar

What I would like to learn and practice are strategies and techniques to answer international exams like TOEFL. In other words, I would like to practice reading, listening and writing skills. Also, I would like to make a review of past perfect and present perfect and to know when to use them. Other interesting topic is hyphenated adjectives. Besides I want to learn more phrasal verbs. Finally, I would like to practice the simple past pronunciation because it sounds different depending on the last letters of a verb. For example, "watched", "studied" and "worked".
